Gregory J. Ginther, of Salem and formerly of Keizer, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012.

Born in Watertown, S.D. to Edward and Margaret Ginther, his family moved to Keizer on Delight Street in 1942. He attended Keizer Elementary and Sacred Heart Academy.

While in the U.S. Navy, he served on a tugboat, performing multiple missions in and around Japan after the Korean war.

An avid roller skater, he met Joann Robinson while managing the Salem Roller Dome. They married and had seven children and 50 years together.

Mr. Ginther was a Salem Police officer for more than 30 years.

Upon retirement, he and Joann traveled and spent time with their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and wife. Survivors include: his children, Daniel (Gwyneth), Philip (Kim), Matthew (Jane), Melinda Wiltse (Victor), Carrie Darras (Mikel), Valerie Clark (Ken), Kathleen Ginther, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. A rosary ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. before the commencement of the service. A reception will begin upon completion of the services in the church basement.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Teen Challenge or Mid-Valley Women’s Crisis Center. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
