Donald Gene Herring, of Keizer, passed away on October 6, 2011 at the age of 79. He was born October 16, 1931 in Hatfield, Arkansas to Herman “Hank” and Effie Mae (Hastings) Herring.
Don and his family moved to the Salem area in 1936. He graduated from Salem High School in 1951. Don served in the U.S. Navy as a Paymaster and later attended the University of Oregon. He married DJ Shafer in 1955. In 1959, Don joined New York Life and retired in 1993. He was a member of First Christian Church in Salem. Don was also involved in Civitan, Marion County Housing Authority and Salem Chamber of Commerce Greeters. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing, remodeling the family home and restoring boats and other vehicles.
Don was preceded in death by his son Gene Monroe Herring in 2008 and his brother Robert L. Herring in 1994. He is survived by his wife DJ of Keizer, daughter Monique Smith Ownby (Ethan) of Salem, grandson, Cody Drew Smith of Salem, sisters Doris Ann Slade of Medford and Hermalene Julia Short of Salem and nieces Linda Edwards and Laurie Hawes.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 12 at Belcrest Memorial Park Chapel. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
