Bears halt Volcanoes eruption

By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes Yakima ended the Volcanoes’ four-game winning streak Saturday with a 9-2 pounding. The Bears, who have been one of the weaker-hitting Northwest League clubs this season, had 16 hits including four doubles and were ahead 7-0 until Salem-Keizer scored its two runs in the fourth inning. The Volcanoes had only five hits. Starting and losing pitcher Brandon Allen gave up 11 hits and seven runs, six earned, in his three innings. The standout Volcanoes player was shortstop Joe Panik, who went 2 for 4 including a triple, drove in a run and scored one, and started two double plays. Yakima’s attack started in the second inning. Henry Zabala doubled to left field. Tyson Van Winkle singled to center, driving in Zabala, and went to second base on Jesus Galindo’s throw home. Danny Pulfer doubled to center and scored Van Winkle. Westley Moss singled to left and drove in Pulfer. In the Bears’ third, singles by Garrett Weber, Marc Bourgeois and David Narodowski, the last on a bunt, loaded the bases. Zabala singled to right, and Weber scored. An errant throw from right field by Ryan Honeycutt allowed Bourgeois to score. Van Winkle grounded out but scored Narodowski. Pulfer sent Zabala home with a single to center. The first Salem-Keizer hit came in the third inning, and it was an infield single by Garrett...
