Whiteaker brings back second Golden Mickey

Whiteaker Middle School’s Concert Choir, 107 students strong, traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in Festival Disney, and returned with the Golden Mickey, the competition’s top honor. The national competition of middle and high school choirs is sponsored by Disney World and Whiteaker’s Concert Choir took first place among the 12 choirs in their division, including some high school choirs. The Wolverines scored 294 out of a possible 300, with one of the three judges giving the group a perfect 100. “I was very pleased with the entire choir,” said director Andy Thomas. “They had been so disciplined in rehearsals the last couple months and sang a very beautiful program with wonderful musicianship. Scores are subjective but a standing ovation says it all.” Seventh-grader Bianca Arevalo won the competition’s Soloist Award for her outstanding performance in the school’s gospel song, He Never Failed Me Yet. In addition to the Disney performance, Whiteaker performed for the Lake Nona Middle School choir program. They then traveled to the University of Central Florida – the second largest college campus in the United States – to perform for Dr. David Brunner, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the university.
