The house at 2115 Chemawa Road NE went down in glory, as Keizer Fire District burned it to the ground as a training exercise Saturday, March 19.

The home was donated to the district, and sits where commercial development is planned as part of the second Keizer Station phase. Both professional and volunteer firefighters set fires in different parts of the house and learned how to respond in various situations.

For Sherrie Moine, a prior owner, the scene was bittersweet: She bought the house in the spring of 1986 with her late husband Denis. Their children, Denis and Genie, were 2 and 4.

The memories are both fantastic and sad.

“Yeah, it’s hard,” said Genie Moine Guisinger, who was there watching the fire exercise with her young son. “I’m just glad it’s being used for something positive, rather than just a bulldozer taking it down.”

The family sold the house in 1999, moving to Chetco Court. They still live in the neighborhood.

“My son was upset when I sold the house,” Sherrie said. “He didn’t want to leave.”
