Curtain falls on Miracle Worker for final time this weekend

HOWALD Of the Keizertimes Each night before a performance of The Miracle Worker, the cast and crew assembles and recites the following: “Make ‘em, laugh, make ‘em cry, make ‘em fall in love.” On the best nights, that’s exactly what they do. “We want them to laugh at the funny parts, cry at the end and fall in love with the characters throughout the show,’ said Rebecca LaPorte, who plays Annie Sullivan, young Hellen Keller’s teacher in the play. The play is based predominantly on Helen Keller’s The Story of My Life.  Keller, who was born in 1880, was stricken with a disease at age 19 months that left her blind and deaf.  By the time she was six, she was the tyrant of the household, demanding and almost feral.  Sullivan was sent to them as a teacher/governess.  The play covers the time from Annie’s arrival and her efforts to tame Helen and teach her how to communicate. McNary’s final shows are March 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. Cost is $5. The play was one that Linda Baker, who is exiting the McNary drama department after the play, waited years to produce on the McNary stage. “It was the first time I could put it on and safely know that I would have an Anne and I could find a Helen,” Baker said. Braun leads CBU Lancers to NAIA swim title

McNary High School graduate and current co-captain of the California Baptist University women’s swim team Hannah Braun recently led the Lancers to a national championship in the NAIA. Braun placed second as a member of 200 medley relay team (1:46.06), and finished fourth as a member of the 800 free relay (7:48.29) to earn two All-American honors at the NAIA National Championships. She finished fifth place in the 200 IM (2:10.0), fifth place in the 100 back (59.15), fifth as a member of the 200 free relay (1:38.9) and eighth as a member of the 400 free relay (3:42.4) to earn four All-American Honorable Mention honors at the championship meet. Her relay team bested the NAIA record by nearly two seconds in the 200 medley the first day of the competition with a time of 7:33.75. The second day of the competition, her 400 medley relay team set a new CBU record with a swim of 3:50.44 Braun, a junior at CBU, is majoring in kinesiology with double minors in global studies and Spanish.
