Freshman football team lays claim to league title

McNary High School’s freshman football team clinched the Central Valley Conference frosh championship with a hard fought 44-36 win at Sprague Thursday, Oct. 21. The win improved the Celts’ record to 8-0 for the season with a homestand with McKay past press time as the only potential roadblock to an undefeated season. After Sprague opened the scoring in the first quarter to lead 6-0, McNary’s Brett Hildebrand ran 14 yards for a touchdown, which along with a Hayden McCowan point after, led to a brief 7-6 Celtic lead. Sprague returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and added the two-point conversion pass for a 14-7 lead. The Olys extended their cushion to 20-7 after a touchdown in the second quarter. After holding the Celtics, Sprague was driving for another score when Garrett Hittner intercepted an Oly pass with 1:12 remaining in the half. McNary drove the length of the field capped it off with a 15-yard Jonathan Doutt touchdown pass to Tanner Purkey just before buzzer sounded. With McCowan’s extra point kick, the Celts closed the gap to 20-14 at halftime. Andrew Lawrence hit Hittner on a 68-yard pass for the only points of the third quarter knotting the score at 20-20. Supplies running low at community food bank

The shelves were empty when volunteers walked into the Keizer Community Food Bank Monday night. They had to dip into the food bank’s funds to provide enough food for the 42 families that came, spending $1,100 at Roth’s after a discount. “It’s a pretty good chunk of the balance,” said Nancy Morgan, publicity director for the Food Bank. “The alternative would have been to turn people away, and we don’t want to do that.” As the holiday season approaches, Morgan said stock dwindles throughout the summer. “The fortunate thing right his moment is we have a good supply of fresh food coming through, but that’s going to end soon as harvest season ends,” Morgan said. She said the food bank has cut back on the amount of food placed in each box. “It’s still adequate and meets the standards,” Morgan added. The food bank is housed at Faith Lutheran Church on River Road.
