A Gervais man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Thursday morning just north of Keizer.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, a resident in the 8000 block of Wheatland Road saw a knocked-down roadsign and subsequently spotted a 1992 Toyota Tacoma pickup at the bottom of a ravine west of the intersection of Wheatland Road and Brooklake Road NE. The call was received at 8:42 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16.
Authorities said the truck was lodged in a tree in a nearly-vertical position. The sheriff’s office said Jeff Weathers, a 53-year-old Gervais resident, was found nearby, and had appeared to be ejected from the vehicle during the accident.
Officers believe the driver was traveling westbound on Brooklake Road when he failed to stop at the intersection with Wheatland Road, went off the shoulder and struck the tree. The vehicle was about 100 feet from the roadway.
The Salem Fire Department’s Heavy Rescue Unit assisted in recovering the victim. The intersection was closed to all traffic until about 1 p.m.
