Hopes and dreams of foodies in the Salem-Keizer area were lifted, and then summarily crushed, in a matter of about two hours. A sign company posted a Trader Joe’s logo on the new Keizer Station sign. But it was a mistake, the sign company told the Keizertimes, and the logo was removed by the end of the day. KEIZERTIMES/Jason Cox & Lyndon A. Zaitz

Of the Keizertimes

Salem and Keizer residents on Facebook and Twitter were buzzing about a Trader Joe’s coming to Keizer Station.

And why wouldn’t they? Keizer Station’s new sign, as of Tuesday afternoon, had the Trader Joe’s logo on it. [MAP: 1]

But it is not to be – at least for now.

“The sign is all a mistake,” said Community Development Director Nate Brown after speaking with a Keizer Station official. “There is no deal done for Trader Joe’s, Old Navy or Marshalls.”

Allan Conant, executive vice president of TubeArt signs – who is building the sign – confirmed the error.

“They’re coming down,” Conant said Tuesday. “They weren’t supposed to be on there. I looked at the wrong print and they got put on there.”

Sure enough, by the end of the day Tuesday it was gone.

Keizer Station officials declined comment for this story. Representatives from Trader Joe’s did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Keizer is not listed on Trader Joe’s “Coming Soon” page on its website. And the company told us in March not to expect the chain anytime soon.

“At this time, we are not scheduled to open a location in Keizer, Oregon,” Alison Mochizuki, director of national publicity for Trader Joe’s, said in March. “It’s not in our two-year (2010-2011) plan. We don’t disclose anything outside of our two-year plan.”

On Facebook and Twitter, the excited chatter quickly moved into disappointment and jokes of conspiracy theories.

Count Sandy Stevens of Keizer among those disappointed.

“That would be a perfect perfect place for them to put a Trader Joe’s,” she said. “Otherwise we have to go to Wilsonville or Corvallis.”
